Our whole day was spent in Florence today, discovering the city as a group & then exploring independently.
We began with a buffet breakfast at our hotel, before many of the group opted for an early start to climb one of the city's high points. After a little confusion with the new ticketing system 21 of us were able to climb all 414 steps to the top of Giotto's bell tower, the Campanile. The views from the top were spectacular, not least because the famed dome of the Duomo was right in front of us. Well worth the effort & sweat!
The group, climbers & non-climbers, regrouped in Florence's main square, Piazza della Signoria, just before 10:00, where we met our local guide Ulrich.
A 2 hour walking tour of the historic city center followed, taking in some of the city'd most famous sights & learning the true meaning of the Renaissance along the way - a lesson in history, architecture, art & culture. We finished our tour in the Central market where we were all able to enjoy the new 'food court' that showcases this regions foods - cheese. meats including Florentine steaks, pizzas, olive oils, Tuscan bean soups, etc. A true foodie paradise.
The rest of the afternoon was free to explore the birthplace of the Renaissance at leisure. When we regrouped this evening the were many tales to tell, including visits to the Duomo, to the Pitti Palace, to historic churches, leather stores, Michelangelo's David, & more.
Dinner this evening was authentic Italian pizza, in a neighborhood eatery very close to our hotel. Afterwards we enjoyed gelato in another neighborhood location, then some of the group took on the challenge of a hike to the viewpoint over Florence - a great end to a great day.
