On Thursday we bade farewell to beautiful Florence & the charming Hotel Silla, as we journeyed back to Rome for our final three nights.
The main focus of our journey was the Umbrian 'hill town' of Assisi, famous for centuries as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi.
After a 2+ hour journey from Florence we arrived in Assisi where we were greeted by our local guide Simona. After quick stops for bathrooms & to be equipped with receivers & headsets we began our walking tour of the pristine town of pink & white sandstone.
Amongst the sights we saw were the Basilica of St. Clare (where this disciple of St. Francis is buried), the main square with its Roman temple, the small back streets of Assisi, & finally the main attraction, the Basilica of St. Francis, with it upper & lower churches & their magnificent frescoes.
At the end of our tour we had time for lunch, shopping or further exploring in Assisi.
Another two hours driving took us to our hotline Rome.
Later we rode the Rome metro into the historic center for dinner in a quaint, locally-owned restaurant. Then we finished our day with a relaxed walking tour of some of 'Rome By Night', seeing the Pantheon, famous churches, & the Trevi Fountain.
